Art Connection Studio artists recently engaged in Energy Art, also known as “Energism”. It refers to experiencing energy within an object on an emotional level. This art process involves creating flows of energy swirls within an art piece. Our Energy Art class was a 6 week session in which artists explored their feelings in order to connect those feelings to their art work. Before this art modality took place, we wanted the artists to loosen up. To have artists become relaxed and get in touch with their thoughts and feelings, they were guided to participate in scribble drawing. Scribbling is an activity to help focus your mind on the present. It allows a person to take deep breaths, break free from stress, and tap into the imagination. In addition, the outcome of the scribble cannot be good or bad.
In this particular exercise, artists gathered around a table and were given paper and colored pencils. This exercise had the artists close their eyes and scribble on their paper for 30 seconds to 1 minute intervals. Artists listened to different genres of music during the scribbling. When time was up, artists opened their eyes to view what was created. The artists then proceeded to pass their drawing to the right and then they would scribble on their neighbor’s art work. The artists passed the papers around until their original artwork came back to them. This exercise provided the artists with a sense of togetherness because they each put their own creative energy into each image. This exercise led the artists to have an easier time tapping into the energy flows that would be included in their art pieces.
